Eligible Hardships
The DFAC Cares Fund is intended to assist with unexpected hardships, such as:
• Death in the family
• Loss of employment
• Emergency home or vehicle repairs
• Natural disasters or pandemics
• Discrimination or rights violations related to sexual orientation
• Domestic violence or abuse situations
• Unexpected medical diagnosis or hospitalization
• Eviction or housing insecurity
• Loss of a caregiver or dependent support
• Mental health crisis
• Theft or vandalism resulting in financial strain
• Legal issues resulting in financial hardship
• Immigration-related emergencies
• Sudden increase in caregiving responsibilities
• Loss of essential personal documents
Use of Funds The fund may be used for the following:
• Utility bills (when service is at risk of being disconnected or a final notice has been issued)
• Medical expenses (including prescriptions, urgent care, or mental health services)
• Basic living expenses such as groceries, diapers, formula, clothing, hygiene products
• Temporary housing or shelter costs
• Transportation assistance
• Legal document fees
• Safety-related expenses
• Childcare or eldercare support during emergencies
• Technology needs for communication or access to services
Application Process
Applications must be submitted at least 14 days before the service or support is at risk of termination. Late applications may be denied.
Required Documentation:
• Completed DFaC Cares Fund Application (submitted by the individual or a DFaC Director)
• Copy of the bill(s) to be paid, including account numbers and payment details
• Any other necessary supporting documentation
Review and Approval Process
1. Application is reviewed by the Fund Administrator, who may request additional information.
2. Forwarded to the President of the Board of Directors for presentation to the Board for discussion and vote.
3. All personal information is kept confidential.
4. Approval depends on the application and available funding; approval is not guaranteed.
5. If approved, payment is made directly to the company (not the applicant).
6. Checks are mailed directly to the service provider.
